Remember back when summer break seemed to last forever? Remember before you were old enough to think about things like your mortgage, college reunions & work deadlines…? Remember being a kid?
What I remember is gathering small bright red fruit at a local ‘pick your own’ place. Sweet, slightly tart. Warm in the Summer sun. Juicy.
I bet if you’re as old as me ( don’t ask…) you remember something similar. Strawberries were the best. Those Strawberries, along with those summer days, seem gone forever.
It’s Summer here at our little Cupcake Bakery and that means our Very Strawberry Cupcake is on the menu. That also means we need loads of fresh Strawberries to make our little beauties. We have come to a collective realization lately regarding the favorite summer fruit of my youth.
Strawberries aren’t Strawberries anymore.
Now most Strawberries are big, bulbous flavorless lumps of something similar to styrofoam. We love using local produce when we can. We only use the best Strawberries in our Cupcake. We never use the flavorless mass-produced factory farm grown Strawberries. Finding local grown Strawberries isn’t hard, but almost no one is growing those old varieties anymore. We scour the local Farmer’s Markets for sweet, tangy Strawberries. Don’t worry. We always find the best, but it’s not easy. It’s almost impossible to find something that is actually red inside. It makes us sad.
We miss Strawberries.
That’s why we have decided to call on you gentle reader. Perhaps you know of a local Strawberry grower near us? We would even pick our own, even if just for the nostalgia.
